Sprayer calibration is usually based on volume output, bar width, speed, and nozzle flow. But performance is defined by residual binder applied per area, which depends on the emulsion density and binder content. If specific gravity changes, the same volume sprayed delivers a different mass of emulsion and therefore a different residual bitumen rate after breaking. That leads to under bonding, stripping, or waste and flushing. Calibrating with the actual density ensures the pump, flow meter, and nozzle charts translate into correct kg per square meter. It also improves cost control and compliance with project specs.
