Asphalt emulsion is increasingly preferred because many regulated markets restrict coal tar products due to PAH concerns and stormwater runoff impacts. Asphalt emulsions can meet similar protective goals with a lower regulatory burden and easier messaging for worker safety and environmental compliance. They also align with procurement policies that prefer lower toxicity materials and more transparent SDS profiles. While coal tar can offer strong chemical resistance, the compliance and liability risks are often unacceptable for public agencies and commercial operators.
