Asphalt emulsion surfactants are chosen to stabilize asphalt droplets, control particle charge, and deliver a predictable break on mineral surfaces. They are often specialized cationic amines, quaternary ammonium compounds, or tailored anionic soaps and sulfonates with strong affinity to aggregates. Household detergents prioritize soil removal, foaming, and rinse behavior, not controlled demulsification and film formation. Emulsion surfactants must tolerate high temperature processing, high ionic strength water, pH adjustment, and long storage without losing stability or causing premature coagulation.
