Consistency depends on tight control of bitumen temperature and viscosity, aqueous phase pH and ionic strength, accurate ratio dosing, and stable colloid mill settings such as rotor speed and gap. Water quality and emulsifier concentration must be controlled batch to batch. Transfer pumps and piping should minimize shear and contamination. Inline monitoring of density, temperature, and sometimes viscosity helps detect off-ratio conditions early. A strong SOP also includes cleaning, grade changeover procedures, sample retention, and calibrated lab testing to prevent drift over time.
