Asphalt emulsion functions as a low temperature binder delivery system that can coat aggregates, bond layers, seal surfaces, and form protective films. In pavements it acts as tack coat, chip seal binder, slurry seal binder, or cold mix binder. In waterproofing it creates a continuous coating on concrete or masonry and can bond reinforcement fabrics. In surface treatments it reduces raveling, improves waterproofing of the wearing course, and restores appearance. Performance depends on emulsion charge, setting speed, residue content, and any polymer modification matched to aggregate chemistry and climate.
