RS 1 is a rapid setting emulsion designed to break quickly on contact with aggregate and surface fines, making it suitable for chip seals, rapid maintenance treatments, and some tack applications where traffic return must be fast. The rapid break reduces pickup and tracking, but it also reduces working time and increases sensitivity to contamination in sprayers and storage. Uniform application and correct residual binder rate are critical because the emulsion sets before it can self level. Contractors often prefer RS grades when humidity is moderate and the goal is immediate chip embedment and early strength.
