RS-1 is typically required where very fast breaking and early strength are needed, such as surface dressing, chip seals, and spray applications that must hold aggregate quickly and reopen to traffic sooner. It is used when work windows are short, traffic is high, or climate requires rapid set to avoid pickup and tracking. RS grades are also preferred when aggregates are relatively clean and the process relies on immediate adhesion and breaking on contact. Because rapid setting reduces workability time, it is not ideal for slurry seal or mixes that need longer mixing and placement time.
