Selection starts with the paving specification and target residual binder rate, then matches grade and setting behavior to surface texture, traffic control, and weather window. The emulsion must spray uniformly at the required rate and break in a predictable time without tracking under construction traffic. Aggregate and old surface chemistry can require cationic systems for better adhesion. Verification includes sprayer calibration tests, tray checks for uniformity, and bond focused field inspection. The wrong grade or rate is a common cause of delamination even when the overlay mix is good.
