Specific gravity is controlled mainly through bitumen content, water addition accuracy, and minimization of entrained air. Plants typically measure it using hydrometers, digital density meters, or lab pycnometers on grab samples from circulation lines or finished tanks. Inline density sensors are used in higher automation setups to trend batch consistency. Operators correlate density to residue tests and adjust dosing pumps or flow meters. Sudden density shifts often indicate dilution errors, water carryover, soap strength variation, or air ingress from suction lines.
