Rubber modification increases elastic recovery and improves crack bridging, which helps coatings and crack fillers tolerate thermal movement and minor substrate cracking. It can improve resistance to fatigue and reduce brittleness at lower temperatures, while also increasing viscosity and reducing flow at higher temperatures. Service life can improve if the modified residue maintains flexibility and adhesion over time, but only if formulation is stable and application is correct. Rubberized emulsions often need tighter production control and better spray filtration because higher viscosity and particles can clog nozzles. Proper curing time is also critical because trapped water reduces early strength.
