Gilsonite is a natural asphalt that can increase hardness, chemical resistance, and high temperature rutting resistance of asphalt binders, but it can reduce low temperature flexibility if overdosed. Asphalt emulsions are a delivery form, not a modifier, so durability depends on base binder and any polymer or rubber additives. A gilsonite modified residue may improve abrasion resistance, yet polymer modified emulsions typically deliver better elastic recovery and crack bridging. For contractors, the decision is usually performance target and application method: gilsonite is more about binder stiffness, while emulsions focus on low temperature application and controlled breaking.
