Cold mix using emulsions reduces energy by avoiding high temperature aggregate drying and binder heating required in hot mix asphalt. Aggregates can often be used at ambient temperature, and mixing occurs without maintaining high plant temperatures. The emulsion’s water phase enables workable coating and compaction at lower temperatures, with strength developing as water evaporates and the emulsion breaks. Energy savings depend on climate and moisture, but the biggest reduction is typically fuel use at the asphalt plant. The tradeoff is longer cure time and sensitivity to weather during placement.
