Tack coats need controlled break and strong adhesion on thin films, often requiring emulsifiers that resist premature breaking yet bond quickly on contact. Surface dressing needs fast breaking and good aggregate wetting. Slurry and micro surfacing require slow setting chemistry to allow mixing and placement. Waterproofing emulsions need film forming stability and sometimes polymer compatible emulsifiers. Breaking time is tuned through emulsifier chemistry, pH, additive selection, and residue content. A manufacturer chooses emulsifier systems based on aggregate chemistry, application method, and climate, not only on lab values.
