CRS-1 is a cationic rapid setting emulsion commonly used for chip seals, surface dressing, and tack applications where a fast break is needed to lock aggregate quickly and enable faster traffic return. Its rapid breaking behavior means it is sensitive to aggregate moisture, dust, and application temperature, and it usually should not be heavily diluted because that can alter break and residue rate. Equipment must be properly calibrated to avoid overapplication that causes bleeding or underapplication that leads to stone loss. Contractors should confirm compatibility with local aggregates and follow DOT application rate guidance.
