Prime coat emulsion selection depends on base course gradation, absorption, and dustiness. Open graded or very dry bases need an emulsion with good penetration and enough residual binder to lock fines, often slow setting grades or specially formulated prime emulsions, sometimes diluted per spec. Dense, well bound bases need lighter application rates to avoid surface sealing and slippage. Aggregate chemistry also matters: cationic emulsions bond better to siliceous aggregates, while anionic can work with calcareous. Always verify break time and penetration in a small field trial before full scale spraying.
