Emulsions are shear sensitive, so low shear positive displacement pumps are commonly preferred, such as progressive cavity pumps, lobe pumps, or diaphragm pumps for certain duties. Centrifugal pumps can be used if properly sized and operated away from high shear conditions, but they can increase droplet breakup and destabilize some formulations, especially polymer modified grades. Material compatibility is critical: use corrosion resistant wetted parts and avoid reactive metals if the emulsion is acidic. Control systems should limit speed changes, avoid cavitation, and maintain steady flow to spray bars to prevent pulsation and streaking.
