Asphalt emulsions are favored where low temperature application, reduced VOC exposure, and easier regulatory compliance are needed. Industrial applications include tack coats, chip seals, slurry and cold mixes, waterproofing and dampproofing coatings, and certain stabilization or maintenance treatments. Cutbacks are sometimes chosen for very low temperature or penetration needs, but solvent regulations and fire risk are major drawbacks. Foamed asphalt is typically used in cold recycling and stabilization where foaming equipment is available, but emulsions can be more practical for sprayed bonding layers and maintenance coatings with existing spray fleets.
