Tanks should be designed to minimize contamination and excessive shear while maintaining uniformity. Common choices are carbon steel with appropriate coatings or stainless steel for corrosion sensitive services, especially with acidic cationic emulsions. Use smooth internal finishes, dedicated lines, and low shear agitation or gentle recirculation to prevent creaming without entraining air. Temperature control is important: avoid freezing and avoid overheating that destabilizes the emulsion. Provide proper vents, level measurement, sampling points, and drainability for cleaning. Segregate grades to prevent cross contamination and include spill containment and washdown provisions.
