Particle size is controlled mainly by colloid mill rotor speed, stator design, and gap setting, along with binder viscosity and soap solution properties. Higher shear generally reduces droplet size, but excessive shear or wrong pump selection can destabilize the emulsion. Temperature control is critical because viscosity shifts change milling efficiency. Operators also manage bitumen content, emulsifier dose, and pH to stabilize the created droplets. Routine monitoring uses sieve tests, viscosity trends, settlement checks, and in some plants laser particle size measurements.
