Slow-setting cationic emulsions commonly use amine-based emulsifiers formulated to remain stable longer before breaking, combined with controlled acid dosing and sometimes stabilizers or retarders. Breaking time is tuned by emulsifier chemistry, concentration, pH, water hardness, and bitumen temperature. In plants, the “control levers” are emulsifier selection, soap solution pH, bitumen content, and milling conditions. Field performance must be validated on the intended aggregate because mineralogy strongly affects break behavior.
