Polymer modification increases cohesive strength and improves elastic recovery after deformation, which helps the residual binder resist cracking and rutting. In cationic systems, improved wetting and stronger film formation can increase adhesion on aggregates, especially under moisture stress. The tradeoff is tighter process control because polymers raise viscosity, narrow the stable pH and temperature window, and can reduce storage stability if shear and cooling are not managed carefully.
